A Comparative Ethnography on Health Belief of Aged between Urban and Rural Residents

Abstract
Purpose: In this comparative ethnography, the health believes of aged were explored.

Methods: Key informants were 10 women and 5 men aged 70 or more. Data were collected through iterative fieldwork by ethnographyic interviews and participant observation which conducted in a clan of a rural district and a urban district between September 2004 and February 2011. Text were analyzed by taxonomy and critical discourse analysis.
Results: Informants" health concepts consisted with five attributes and multi-dimension. Attributes of health were soundness, mutuality, complementarity, propriety, and habitualness. Informants" from the clan focused on psychosocial and spiritual dimension of attributes of health. In other hand, informants" from the urban district focused on physical dimension of health attributes.

Conclusion: Health belief of the aged were affected with their life history and sociocultural context. Very often the health concepts and etiologies of the folk health system are not congruent with the professional"s. It is the role of nurse to bridge these discrepancy.
